Nokia, the world¹s leading mobile telecommunications company, recently established a new research facility in Palo Alto to participate in the Silicon Valley ecosystem while pursuing a wide range of experimental systems research projects.

Nokia Research Center Palo Alto, is focusing on the theme of mobile Internet experiences and collective intelligence enabled by the emerging ubiquitous wireless networks, embracing an open innovation model and developing collaborative relationships with universities and industry partners.

Our internship program offers an opportunity for graduate students with skills, experience and interest in a variety of areas to work closely with our researchers in developing innovative software and services. Our research areas encompass a broad range of topics, including web application development, human-computer interaction, data analysis, information visualization, location-based services, wireless sensor networks, scalable database systems, computer graphics, computer vision, information retrieval, machine learning and data mining.

"Interning at Nokia provided me with an opportunity to work with interesting and talented researchers from many disciplines. While I work in human-computer interaction, I became friends with other interns and researchers who were innovating next generation wireless hardware, computer vision, and data mining applications (to name a few). Thus, my summer at Nokia gave me a fantastic experience conducting research in my own area, and learning about the cutting edge of technology across other areas of computing."
-Max Harper, University of Minnesota

"What I gained most from my internship at Nokia Research Center is precious hands-on experience. My research work at school mainly involves theoretical analysis and simulation verifications. Whereas, the Nokia internship complements that by providing state-of-the-art handheld communication devices, well-setup development tools and environments. It is exciting that I can turn my ideas into practical applications on real devices, which then further inspires more ideas."
-Bo Xing, UC Irvine

"As the leading mobile device company, Nokia definitely takes you on the wave of exciting mobile technology. The projects here are research-oriented, but also very hands-on. It is amazing that your idea will be realized and the product will be used by millions of people. You are free to choose the projects which you could best fit in. They are always open to your suggestions. The resource and support you get from your collegues to back up your project are supurb. Besides, you will enjoy the high-tech ecosystem in Silicon Valley. The regular on-site techincal talks provide you with the great opportunity to know of the cutting edge technology, and lots of exciting research topics inside and outside the valley."
-Tao Jin, Northeastern University

"Working at Nokia was a great experience, I got to work on a cool project, with great people, in a really nice environment. I turned down PARC and Microsoft to come to Nokia, and never looked back. I was given the opportunity to take ownership on a project while working closely with my manager and other interns, Nokia was even flexible in letting me stay on as a part-time intern through the school year. Nokia is true to it's word at connecting people, you are not simply another intern-as-contractor, but a valuable colleague to collaborate with while solving exciting problems in mobile computing. ."
-Ben Congleton, University of Michigan
