Update on the Mobile Data Challenge

Last November, Nokia Research Center launched the Mobile Data Challenge call for proposals, offering the academic community a chance to work with NRC's recently completed data set of mobile sensor information. Collected over a year's time from more than 200 mobile phones in Lake Geneva, Switzerland, this rich and relatively unexplored data set contains a wealth of social and geographic information.

The call was well received, with nearly 700 researchers affiliated with hundreds of different universities and research institutes around the world, contributing more than 400 challenges for review. In early January, the teams received the data and have now started the MDC related analysis. The challenge comprises both Open and Dedicated Track alternatives, allowing researchers to approach the data from an exploratory perspective, or to use the data to focus on concrete tasks with defined training, testing and evaluation measures.

Selected challenge entries will be selected to the final workshop, as organized in conjunction with the Pervasive 2012 conference in June.
