NRC at the International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR)

Nokia Research Center (NRC) is presenting three of its latest augmented reality demonstrations and two augmented reality papers at the International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR) in Orlando, Florida October 19-22.

Researchers from NRC Palo Alto and Stanford University will present the paper 'Streaming Mobile Augmented Reality on Mobile Phones', and provide examples of the streaming mobile augmented reality application with a demonstration which identifies books, CD's and DVD's in real-time through a mobile device's video camera; without the need to pause to look up or search for information.

NRC Tampere researchers will be presenting the paper 'A Solution for Navigating User-Generated Content' which reveals the concept behind Image Space, the navigable mirror world based on user generated content combined with the social aspects of content sharing. Nokia Image Space Mobile Browser will be presented as a demonstration to provide an augmented reality view to the mirror world.

The final research concept to presented at ISMAR is the Near-to-eye display with integrated gaze tracker. The Gaze Tracker demonstration allows the user to browse images simply by using the direction of their gaze. For the demonstration at ISMAR the gaze interaction has been built to fit the Image Space solution so the user can navigate through locations by browsing the interlinked photos.

All these projects are part of a series of NRC studies focused on enhancing interaction between users and the different media and information in the world around them. It is built on more than a decade of academic research into mixed or augmented reality.
