David Murphy

Senior Researcher, Mixed Reality
NRC Helsinki

Background

I started as an NRC Helsinki trainee during the summer of 2003, and joined the Data Drive Applications team full-time in August 2004, after getting my Bachelors in (computer) engineering from Trinity College Dublin (University of Dublin). After giving the noodles and frozen pizza lifestyle a break for a while, I returned to part-time studentdom in autumn 2006 as an Information and Computer Science student at Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University), graduating with an MSc in Computers and Information Science.

My work has focused mostly on mixed and augmented reality, I am currently a Senior Mixed Reality Researcher with the Mixed Reality Solutions program at NRC Helsinki, Finland.

Research Projects

Nokia City Scene

I worked on client development and concept prototyping on Nokia City Scene, a mixed reality "Mirror World" browser, allowing users to browse a 3D replica of the world on mobile and desktop. I have also worked on using Nokia City Scene as a content creation tool for mixed and augmented reality, both 2D images freely placed and aligned with building facades, and textured 3D models. Nokia City Scene was released as a public beta for Nokia N9.

Nokia Image Space

I worked on the Mobile Augmented Reality client that complimented the Image Space Mixed Reality Social Media Sharing Service.  The service was in public beta.

Mobile Augmented Reality (MARA)

I worked on mobile-device based augmented reality from August 2004 until June 2007, with the MARA project (formerly "Virtual View"). Somehow the (outdoor) testing phase always seemed to happen in December. It was picked up by MIT Technology Review magazine, who selected it as one of their ten emerging technologies from 2007. We revisited MARA in 2008 with the release of the Nokia Navigator, Nokia's first phone with an embedded compass.

Nokia Tej

I worked on web client development for the Nokia Tej business service, while it was in the experimental phase in NRC with the Self Provisioned Services Team.

Nokia Album

A meta-data based personal visual content management system which got some good press for it's cell-id based geo-tagging, bluetooth tagging, and easy internet uploading. All of which were rather novel in 2004-2005.
