I started as an NRC Helsinki trainee during the summer of 2003, and joined the software lab full time in August 2004, after getting my Bachelors in (computer) engineering from Trinity College Dublin (University of Dublin). After giving the noodles and frozen pizza lifestyle a break for a while, I returned to part-time studentdom in autumn 2006 as a Bio-informatics student at Helsinki University of Technology, mainly interested in EEG data classification for user interaction. I'm currently with the Self Provisioned Services group in NRC Helsinki.
Mobile Augmented Reality (MARA)
I worked on mobile-device based augmented reality from August 2004 until June 2007, with the MARA project (formerly "Virtual View"). Somehow the (outdoor) testing phase always seemed to happen in December. It was picked up by MIT Technology Review magazine, who selected it as one of their ten emerging technologies from 2007.
I was also involved with the Nokia Album project, a meta-data based personal visual content management system. It's freely available here for most S60 phones. It's gotten some good press for it's cell-id based geo-tagging, bluetooth tagging, and easy internet uploading.
Other interests
UPnP and home networks, data-mining, metadata, things that have blinkenlights or go "ping".
I have more interests than time, but cycling, rock-climbing, and recently taekwondo keep me fit, twanging on a guitar and plinking on a keyboard keep my adolescent rock-star dreams barely alive, and in between I take photos.
