Background

I started my Nokia career at Nokia Networks as a user interface designer in 1998. We designed PC applications for TETRA Networks. I joined Nokia Research Center in 2001 and worked first  couple of years as a usability consultant for internal and external products that different development teams implemented. There were different kinds of products ranged from mobile, desktop, and web applications depending on the project.

Research Interests

I'm currently pursuing a doctoral thesis, which is a combination of HCI and game research. I'm interested in playability of mobile games and especially how to evaluate it. Playtesting has been the main method in game industry and the objective of the evaluations have been in game experience. However, playability can be seen as a prerequisite for a good game experience. In my studies I want to explore what kinds of playability heuristics are needed to support playability experts when they are conducting game evaluations.

Playability of mobile games consist of different components, which are relevant for all mobile games. In game evaluations the evaluator needs to focus on both user interface and gameplay in order to fully evaluate the game. In addition, there are some specific issues that are relevant for specific games. For example multiplayer games and pervasive mobile games require their own heuristics.

Mobile games also provide interesting possibilities for non-game applications and I'm also exploring how we can utilize knowledge from the game research in other domains. One possible research direction is to explore playful and pleasurable experiences...

My other research interests are related to next generation mobile user interfaces and interaction methods.
