Background

I received my MSc in Computer Science from Helsinki University of Technology in 1994. Since joining Nokia, I have worked in various units; most lately and for the longest period in the Software Laboratory at Nokia Research Center.

Research Projects

  • Mobile Web Server -- Porting Apache httpd to S60 and creating a connectivity solution that makes a Web server on a mobile phone in the 2G/3G networks of today just as reachable and addressable as any other Web server on the Internet. Researching, exploring and implementing application concepts for personal mobile websites.
  • Research and implementation of a framework in C++ for mobile applications, supporting Meta Object Facility and searches on aggregated data sources.
  • Researching means for synchronizing the file system of a mobile phone with a directory hierarchy on a server.
  • Making Linux run on Nokia hardware. In this project that was a part of the effort that eventually produced the Nokia 770 I ported the Linux kernel as an experiment to the Nokia 7650. To the best of my knowledge this is the output of Linux booting for the first time ever on Nokia mobile phone hardware.

In general I enjoy working in projects where the creation of working prototypes plays a significant role.

Research Interests

There are few things I would not take at least a superficial interest in. At work, ideas that appear too hard or even downright impossible to implement appeal to me the most. Currently, I am interested in pushing the limits on what kind of services you can run on a mobile phone.

Personal Info

I am a Swedish speaking Finn and I work and live in Helsinki, Finland. Outside work, I enjoy boating and cottage life, building things (like a carpenter), skiing and, perhaps most of all, reading. My library is that of an omnivore but mostly I tend to read books on science, history and politics.

Working elegant code always impresses me a lot more than ever so shiny PowerPoint slides.
