Jörg Brakensiek

Background

I have been studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Dortmund, Germany. After receiving my diploma degree in 1994, I worked 4 years at the Communication Technology Institute. In 1999, I finished my PhD thesis on Decentral wireless Inhouse Networks for broadband Communication. I joint Nokia Research Center in Bochum, Germany in March 1999.

My work at Nokia Research Center

I started my work at Nokia in the area of Design Reuse, which has been a broad research topic at that time. One challenge has been the development of a consistent, company wide methodology.

From there I moved further to the Computing architecture domain. In the scope embedded bus systems I contributed to two ASIC developments. Making them configurable and programmable has been one objective. Reconfigurable architectures have been a topic for my research activities for a couple of years now. I have been involved in the definition and execution of a couple of German and European funded research projects in this area.

In 2005 I started working on virtualization technologies and multi-core architectures, leading a successful 2.5 year Nokia research program on this topics.

During 2007 I have been supporting the head of the Bochum Laboratory to implement a new organizational structure following a major renewal of NRC's way of working. This includes facilitaing the change process and the setup and fast ramp up of the new team structure and project portfolio.

In parallel, I have been looking for new research and collaboration opportunities for mobile devices in the area of future services and applications, technology enables and end-customer trials.

In October 2007 I relocated to Nokia's System Research Center in Palo Alto, going back to a strong technical focus. I am working on system virtualization solutions for mobile devices, their potential use cases, challenges and solutions. The work includes system concepting, early prototyping and collaboration with industry and academia.

Research Interests

My research interests is covering domains from computing architectures to wireless communication, from hardware to low-level software and operating systems. In recent years I got interested to middleware and application level software as well.

I am very interested to work on system level and then develop and implement a concrete but very convincing element or use case out of this.
