Background

Kemal Ugur joined Nokia Research Center in 2004, and currently he is working as Project Leader, Member of Research Staff in Audio-Visual Content Representation Team. He received his B.S. degree from Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey in 2001, and M.A.Sc.degree from University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, BC, Canada in 2004.

His research interests and experiences are mainly around digital video services and systems. More specifically, he has been performing research on the following areas:

  • Video Coding Algorithms towards High-Resolution High Quality Applications
  • Multiview and 3D Video Coding
  • Rate Control for various Mobile Multimedia Services, such as Packet Switched Conversational (PSC), Packet Switched Streaming (PSS)
  • Error Resilient Video Coding
  • Fast Motion Estimation and Mode Decision Algorithms for Video Coding on Resource Constrained Devices
  • Scalable Video Coding (mainly on MPEG-4 FGS)

During his employment at Nokia, he has actively contributed to various standardization forums, such as 3GPP, ISO/IEC/MPEG and ITU-T/VCEG. In addition, he has given lectures at Tampere University of Technology (TUT) as a guest lecturer for the advanced video compression graduate course. He has authored / co-authored around 40 academic papers and patent applications, and has numerous standardization contributions. He also served as a member of review committee for various conferences.

He was awarded as a "University Graduate Fellow" during his studies at UBC. He is a member of the research team that won the highly-prestigious Nokia Quality Award in the year 2006.
