I am leading the Wireless Systems team in Berkeley. I started the team in February 2011 and we have grown to 14 members since then. We are located in the vicinity of UC Berkeley. The Wireless Systems team innovates and develops differentiating wireless solutions for Nokias’ products as well as concepts for future wireless standards in the areas of cognitive networks, connectivity solutions and radio implementation. The team is multi-disciplinary and takes a cross-layer approach. It has a special role in collaborating with universities, operators and chipset and network manufactures in North America.
I joined Nokia Research Center in 2002 in Helsinki and I have been working in research related to future radio systems since then. I have received several inventor awards and In 2008/2009 I was among the top 10 inventors of Nokia.
Before moving to Berkeley, I have been leading and contributing to research activities on the design and integration of novel radio concepts into cellular systems, including device-to-device communication, (cooperative) relaying and multiband operation. Next to my work at NRC I have been involved in two European research projects. I have been the proof-of-concept subtask leader within the relaying task of WINNER II and I have been leading the device-to-device communication and network coding task within WINNER+.
In 2010 I defended my PhD thesis at Helsinki University of Technology, Finland and in 2003 I received my Dipl. Ing. in Electrical Engineering from Graz University of Technology, Austria.
Research Interests
I am generally interested in novel radio concepts and its integration into cellular and local area systems. In particular I am interested in

- Flexible spectrum usage
- Radio resource management
- MIMO techniques
- Signal processing
- Local area networks
- Supporting business models
and I am familiar with a diverse set of radio standards, including 802.11, LTE, WiMAX, GSM/EDGE, W-CDMA and Bluetooth.
