Martin Botteck

Background

I received my engineering degree (Dipl.-Ing.) from Universität Dortmund in 1988. Further specialising in Communication Engineering and Signal Processing at the Circuits and Systems Lab I received a PhD (Dr.-Ing.) in 1995. Multi-Dimensional Signal Processing for Video Interpolation at that time was a topic interesting enough to be presented in several education courses that I participated in teaching at GRUNDIG EMV, Nürnberg and Philips Research, Eindhoven during that period.

I joined Nokia in 1993 working in the Advanced Development group for Digital Video Broadcasting. We helped to establish the DVB standards and set up the first nationwide television system for that standard together with the KirchGruppe in Germany. After leading the set top box receiver product development project ("d-box") I turned to new challenges:

In 2000 and 2001 I led a set of programs that targeted to establish application platforms and environments for the then newly emerging Bluetooth communication standard. This work led me to becoming a Chief Architect for Local Connectivity in the Nokia mobile device platform.

Research

After several years in Product and Advanced Development I joined the Nokia Research Center then leading a group on "Validation and Testing Technologies". Achievements of that group include the establishment of a new (ETSI) standardised language for programming automated tests (TTCN-3) and its successful adoption by several product development departments.

Lateron focus shifted towards other topics: Music playback with extremely low energy consumption led us to develop some interesting solutions based on accelerator architectures in connection with OpenMAX IL.

My current research activities include

  • Perceptional Music Analysis ("How to sort a music library according to perceptional impression?")
  • Virtualisation ("How to efficiently abstract hardware details from the computing platform?")
  • Multimedia Display Connectivity ("How to display high resolution content from a small device on a big screen?")

As a member of the Incubation Team in SRC Bochum I furthermore synchronise activities across the Bochum SRC research teams and actively pursue to extend our contacts to the regional research community. Therefore, I am holding lectures at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and host several workshops.

Interests

Given the diverse topics I have been confronted with during my career I have gained experience and am further intereseted in the following aras:

  • Multimedia
  • Local Connectivity
  • Signal Processing Systems
  • Computing Architectures

Private Interests

I am an irregular dillettante on several instruments (although I was not that bad at piano when I was still younger). I like to travel (and have done much of that before I decided to trade that for a family life) and read a lot. Recently, I discovered the excitement of sailing small boats (dinghies).
