Background

I joined Nokia Research Center in 2004 after receiving my MSc in Computer Science from the University of Helsinki in 2003. Lately I've been active in the area of consumer services. Before that my main activities consisted of data and metadata management on mobile devices.

Before joining Nokia I worked a couple of years as a research assistant at the Department of Computer Science, University of Helsinki. I did my Master's thesis on benchmarking open source databases.

Research Projects

  • Consumer Services - While the Internet is rather conveniently accessible with a mobile device, the interaction between, and the integration of the mobile device and web services is just beginning.
    • Contacts Browser Plugin [link] - As part of the Consumer Services research we sketched a concept where phone numbers on ordinary web pages are turned into links to interact with your device. The concept was implemented as a research prototype.
  • Metadata management on S60 - The S60 based smartphones are powerful devices. Along with many other tasks, they are used to handle images, music, video clips and other multimedia. Managing these items so that applications have access to the same metadata requires a metadata management system. The system needs to offer storage and search operations for multiple applications. I conducted research with open source relational databases and in using them in managing versatile metadata. The research resulted in:
    • Porting a relational open source database to S60 platform.
    • Design and implementation of a metadata management system.
