We are forming a new team at the Nokia Research Center in Palo Alto to define and carry out research, design, and development focused on innovative user interfaces for mobile devices and services to accompany them.
Our team will be focusing on some of the new technology trends and mobile user behaviors, such as taking into account the ever increasing amount of data that is created, collected and consumed through mobile devices (text, photo, audio, video), and bridging mobility with online services. We will investigate the emerging communication practices that combine multiple phone channels and communication through services offered by social networking sites. Our goals is to also incorporate devices with non-traditional form factors and study how they can help mediate communication among people in everyday life. Our research philosophy follows a human-centered, iterative design approach, starting with deep understanding of user behaviors and needs, ideation and concept design, followed by prototyping of concepts, system building and their evaluation in the lab or in small scale deployments. Here are research areas that are already under way:
Semantic Graphics and Interactive Visualizations
Rapid Prototyping for Mobile Phones
Mobile Phones as Social Actors
We are looking to expand our team with experts in the following disciplines: human-computer interaction, design, cognitive or social sciences, computer graphics, information visualization, network and data analysis, software engineering and systems design. In particular, we seek people experienced in some of these areas:
