The research being conducted at Nokia Research Center focuses on fourareas identified as: Rich Context Modeling, New User Interface, HighPerformance Mobile Platform and Cognitive Radio. Together, they explore the experiencespeople will have in the future, the technology and interfaces they willuse, and the infrastructure required to make it happen.

As leaders in open innovation, our teams - co-located with leading universities around the world - are collaborating with a network of leading institutions to research these four focus areas and define the emerging age of mobility.

Rich Context Modeling

Desirable experiences meeting consumer needs.

Rich context is characterized by the use of a wide range of sensed and historic information, aggregated into a coherent model of a user’s state and surroundings; including things like their location, motion, weather, connectivity options, and proximity to others. This data and its analysis form the backbone for a new class of services in areas like weather, traffic, wellness, or entertainment.

New User Interface

Joyful and intuitive mobile interactions.

Future user interfaces will need to combine the personalization and adaptive aspects of the device with data-sharing enabled by the back-end infrastructure and the seamless integration with Internet services. In addition, they will incorporate an individual’s unique characteristics (e.g., movements, activities, environment) and personal needs (e.g., preferred input/output modalities, service preferences, etc.) to seamlessly blend with their lives and to deliver superior consumer experiences.
